Trekking To Magallanes National Reserve In Punta Arenas

This half-day outdoor adventure is perfect for beginner trekkers, as the route is not particularly challenging but still offers the chance to explore the Magallanes National Reserve. This protected, forested area features a network of trails that are ideal for both trekking and mountain biking.

The reserve is situated just 8 kilometers west of Punta Arenas, covering an expanse of 20,878 hectares. Inside the reserve flows the Río De las Minas, where coal was first discovered. This significant event prompted Governor José de los Santos Mardones to relocate the colony from Fuerte Bulnes to what is now Punta Arenas in 1848.

Our excursion begins by passing through various southern neighborhoods of the city before taking a paved road leading directly to the reserve. Upon arrival, we follow a 4 km route surrounded by the lush Patagonian forest to reach the trailhead, where we will walk for approximately half an hour.

As we hike, you'll have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of endemic flora, including rosemary, sarsaparilla, devil’s strawberry, calafate, murtilla, notro, leñadura, michay, as well as coigüe and lenga forests. Bird enthusiasts may spot local species such as chunchos, rayaditos, chercanes, cachañas, chincoles, cometocinos, thrushes, and tiuques.

Along the trail, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the De las Minas River Valley as it winds its way towards the Strait of Magellan. After midday, once this memorable experience concludes, we will follow the same route back to Punta Arenas.
