Tour Description
This immersive full-day tour offers the perfect opportunity to explore the northern region of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, including a visit to the picturesque town of Porvenir and the renowned King Penguin colony at Bahía Inútil.
Your journey begins early, around 7:00 a.m., with departure from your hotel in Punta Arenas. You’ll head to the Tres Puentes terminal to board a scenic two-hour ferry crossing to Porvenir on Isla Tierra del Fuego. This voyage takes you across the historic Strait of Magellan, a crucial 583 km waterway linking the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic. Once in Porvenir, you'll explore the Fernando Cordero Rusque Museum, featuring exhibits on local wildlife, the history of Chilean cinema, gold mining, and a fascinating archaeology and ethnography collection dedicated to the Selknam, the ancient inhabitants of Patagonia.
After savoring a delicious regional lunch, the tour continues along the edge of Bahía Inútil, offering breathtaking views of the vast pampas and endless horizons that define this unique island landscape.
During the drive, you’ll encounter a variety of bird species, traditional sheep farms, and herds of guanacos, a South American camelid closely related to llamas and alpacas. After traveling approximately 114 km, you’ll arrive at the King Penguin Park, home to a permanent colony of these magnificent birds—the second largest penguin species after the emperor penguin.
These impressive penguins are expert divers, often plunging to significant depths in search of squid. If you visit during the summer months, you may also have the chance to observe charming penguin chicks, making for an unforgettable wildlife experience.
The adventure continues as you leave the park and travel towards Primera Angostura, the narrowest section of the strait, measuring just 5 km wide. Here, you’ll take a short 20-minute ferry ride back to the mainland before embarking on a 200 km drive that returns you to Punta Arenas.
This is a truly unique experience in Magallanes that you won’t want to miss!
