Tour Fuerte Bulnes, Strait Park

We will depart early from our hotel to embark on today’s adventure. Our journey takes us approximately 52 kilometers south to the Strait of Magellan National Park, where we will visit Fuerte Bulnes. The route follows the legendary Strait of Magellan, offering the chance to observe a variety of seabirds such as oystercatchers, wild geese, several duck species, and the iconic Patagonian cormorants. If we are fortunate, we may also spot dolphins and sea lions along the way.

Upon arrival at the Park, situated at its highest elevation, we will discover the Museum. This modern facility features a multimedia exhibition that uses both art and science to explain the geological processes, local wildlife, and the history of human presence in this remote region. From the expansive terrace, visitors can admire the vastness of the Strait and view the historic Puerto del Hambre, a notable monument.

After years of abandonment, Fort Bulnes was reconstructed between 1941 and 1943 and has since become an essential landmark for those exploring the Strait of Magellan. Established in 1843, it was Chile’s first settlement in the region and a precursor to the founding of Punta Arenas five years later. Today, it is recognized as a National Historic Monument.

Within the Park, you will also find the Wind Forest Trail. Starting at the O’Higgins Lighthouse (located behind Fort Bulnes), this trail winds through a Magellanic Coihue forest shaped by the strong prevailing winds. The trail leads to the Strait Viewpoint, a perfect spot to watch passing ships, seabirds, dolphins, and even whales.

Another highlight is the Coastal Trail. This path meanders through forests and rocky areas surrounding the Fort, providing access to three well-placed viewpoints that showcase the breathtaking landscape of the region.

Finally, we will visit Puerto del Hambre, also known as King Felipe City. Founded in 1584 by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa on behalf of the Spanish crown, this site was established to claim and colonize the Strait of Magellan.
