Trekking In The Cagliero Glacier With Overnight

If you select the WITH TRANSFERS option, our adventure begins at 8:00 am with pick-ups from hotels in El Chaltén, followed by transportation to Reserva Los Huemules. At 9:00 am, our journey starts from the Visitor Center. We will follow the Diablo River upstream, embarking on a 1 hour and 45 minute trek through a vibrant lenga forest along a well-marked trail, leading us to the Diablo Lagoon (770 meters above sea level). Here, we can enjoy views of the Cagliero Post and commence the second phase of our excursion, which transitions out of Los Huemules Reserve and onto private property (Campo Gorra Blanca). Distance: 7 km – Elevation gain: 300 m

The second stage involves traversing the northern edge of Diablo Lagoon over easy but uneven terrain until we reach the start of a Via Ferrata. This section features low-difficulty rock climbing segments, equipped with steel cables and artificial steps to ensure safety and autonomy using harnesses and purpose-designed straps. Before entering this section, our guides will provide participants with all necessary gear and thorough instruction on safe usage. As you grow more comfortable with the equipment, the experience becomes increasingly enjoyable, with breathtaking views of Diablo Lagoon and its namesake valley unfolding as we ascend. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the Glacier Viewpoint, from which we can see the pristine Cagliero Sur Glacier (950 meters above sea level) to the north. A short walk from the viewpoint brings us to the glacier's front, where the guides will fit crampons to the hikers’ boots. Distance: 4 km – Elevation gain: 400 meters

The third segment of our itinerary is glacier trekking and hiking on the ice itself. Weather permitting, we will have lunch on the glacier. Expect to spend around 3 hours exploring the glacier, with the possibility of trying ice climbing depending on weather and group fitness. In the afternoon, we return to the Vivac Cagliero shelter, where you can warm up with a hot beverage while admiring the glacier. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by an overnight stay in our Vivac Dome, which accommodates 6 beds.

The next morning, after breakfast and before lunch, we will begin our return journey. We will descend the same Via Ferrata back to the Base Dome and then take the scenic Green and Blue Lagoon trail, where you’ll discover new landscapes and enjoy views of the north face of Cerro Fitz Roy. The meeting time for the transfer to El Chaltén is 5:30 pm, with arrival at hotels around 6:30 pm.
