Tour Description
Departure from El Calafate along gravel road No. 15, widely recognized as the “Camino de las Estancias”. Throughout this scenic route, it is common to spot condors, foxes, and hares, with the impressive Cerro Frías dominating the landscape. After crossing the Río Rico, the scenery transitions dramatically from Patagonian steppe to a beautiful mountainous setting.
Upon arrival, you will explore the grounds of a traditional Patagonian ranch, which was originally focused on sheep farming. Today, it stands out as the region’s leading Hereford breeding establishment, still maintaining a flock of sheep, blending heritage with modern ranching.
In the stables, guests who have chosen the cabalgata (horseback riding) experience will saddle up and embark on a guided ride, accompanied by an expert Baqueano guide to discover the surroundings.
Meanwhile, other visitors will enjoy a guided hike offering spectacular panoramic views of the South Arm of Lake Argentino. Along the way, you’ll encounter fascinating rock formations shaped by glacial movement and shifting lake levels. The trails lead through forests of lenga and ñire trees, habitats for caracaras, austral parakeets, hares, woodpeckers, eagles, and a diverse array of native flora and fauna. The route may be adjusted based on weather conditions. (Hiking or horseback riding: 45 min/1 hour. Difficulty: easy)
At the conclusion of these activities, the group gathers at the entrance of the shearing shed, now serving as the historical museum of the Estancia. Here, visitors have the chance to observe the barn's original features and learn about its traditional functions. Among the daily routines, guests may also participate in morning milking and sheep herding, gaining a genuine glimpse into the workings of a Patagonian Estancia. Please note, some activities may be subject to weather-related changes.
Afterwards, you’ll head back to the Quincho, where a lamb is being slowly roasted over an open fire. This is an opportunity to delve into the ranch’s rich history, with tales and anecdotes from the early settlers. Passing through the ranch’s vegetable garden, which supplies much of the fresh produce, you’ll arrive at the barbecue area (Quincho) where the grill master will have the Patagonian lamb asado ready. Enjoy a memorable meal accompanied by breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains. After lunch, we will return to the city of El Calafate.
