The Estancia San Lorenzo Natural Reserve is situated within the Peninsula Valdés Protected Natural Area, approximately 160 kilometers from Puerto Madryn city in Patagonia, Argentina.
Along its shores, you will find a colony of over 600,000 Magellanic penguins, making it the largest continental colony worldwide.
Besides the opportunity to observe these incredible animals in their natural environment, the area also features marine fossils visible along the cliffs and ravines that descend towards the sea.
The Magellanic penguin colony at Estancia San Lorenzo has experienced continuous growth since it was established nearly five decades ago. Since 1995, this population has increased by an average of more than 20% annually. Penguins arrive each year at the beginning of September and leave the reserve by the end of April.
Thanks to the wide range of attractions, visitors can choose from several trails, each offering different routes and levels of difficulty according to the area you wish to explore.
During your trip to Puerto Madryn, make sure not to miss a visit to the Penguin Colony and Estancia San Lorenzo in Punta Norte!
Tour Description
The trails and activities can be combined according to your schedule. You can select from the following options:
*Penguin Experience, the classic tour
The trail takes you through a nesting area with frequent penguin activity. Midway, you’ll reach a coastal stretch providing stunning views of the San Matías Gulf and the beach where penguins come and go from the water and rest. The tour concludes at the ruins of the old sea lion oil factory. This tour lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, with departures available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We also suggest the Sunset Experience, which offers the same Penguin Experience but in the late afternoon, starting at 6 p.m.. This is the perfect time to capture the best photos and witness the highest concentration of penguins.
*Land of Penguins, mini-trekking and wildlife watching
This activity includes a mini-trekking through the area with the greatest density of wildlife—a section exclusively accessed by researchers and park rangers and entered only in small groups, always accompanied by a San Lorenzo Ranch Park Ranger.
We visit the “La Colmena” sector, named after the large number of nests concentrated there, and the Penguin Canyon, a key corridor that penguins cross to reach various nesting areas.
One of the most scenic spots is the cliff area, which is also used by penguins for nesting.
On the way back, we travel along the upper part of the coast to return to the starting point. This tour lasts 2 hours and 40 minutes, with departure at 10 a.m.
