Gable Island And Penguin Watching

From the hotel, we will set out by bus heading east, traveling through glacial valleys lined with forests along National Route No. 3.

At approximately 10:15 am, we will reach the Lasifashaj River, where a technical safety briefing will be provided. Here, you will receive rubber boots, waterproof pants, life jackets, paddles, and a very stable, secure canoe. We will then begin our journey, paddling for about 1 hour and 30 minutes through the Guaraní Passage on the Beagle Channel. As we paddle, we will admire the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego, take in breathtaking panoramic views, listen to the sounds of local wildlife, and observe a wide variety of birds and, with some luck, spot playful sea lions.

At 12:00 pm, we will reach the shore to board a motorboat, embarking on a 30-minute navigation around Martillo Island. During this excursion, you will have the opportunity to see Magellanic and Gentoo penguins at close range.

By 12:30 pm, we will arrive at Gable Island, where our guide will share the fascinating early history of Tierra del Fuego, predating the founding of Ushuaia. Inside one of the first colonial buildings, we will enjoy a freshly prepared lunch at a rustic estancia stand, complemented by fine Patagonian red wine and tranquil, sweeping views. After dessert and coffee, around 1:45 pm, we will embark on an interpretive walk across the island through forests of lenga, coihue, ñire, and canelo trees, passing beaver dams and historical remnants of the Yámana people and Anglican missionaries. At 3:00 pm, we will reach the southern shores of Gable Island, where a unique panoramic vista of the Beagle Channel awaits from the high viewpoint of the “gables,” a striking glacial formation.

Around 4:15 pm, we will set sail for 45 minutes towards the Harberton ranch. Our bus will be waiting at Harberton to begin the return journey to Ushuaia. On the way back, we will make a short stop at the famous flag tree for photos, and we are scheduled to arrive in Ushuaia at 6:00 pm.

For those who prefer not to participate in the canoeing experience, there is the option of an extended, in-depth visit to the main house area of the Harberton ranch. Afterwards, you may join the navigation to Gable and Martillo Islands to observe the Magellanic and Gentoo penguins.
